The dreams are broken, but we keep dreaming: New Romantics.

The era of Romanticism in art still exerts a great attraction on people today. Exhibitions with works by Caspar David Friedrich or William Turner attract high numbers of visitors to the museums and their works have a great recognition value. The return to nature, the feeling of longing – these topics seem to be relevant for people again.

This tendency can also be seen in paintings by contemporary artists. Where other currents of modern art often seem distant and abstract, romantic ideas now come to the fore. An inner world of the individual – determined by feelings and thoughts – enters into contact with an external world of nature and history.

This development is certainly also related to the critique of progress and growth that began in the late 1960s. The exhibition asks the question: “What does Romanticism, post-Romanticism mean in the 21st century in times of digitalization, war and crises?” We find works that look into a future that has become uncertain, but which also makes the desire for order, intimacy, and security very clear. Much seems fragile in these idylls. And the romantic spirit in it? It is contradictory! Form-preservation, form-dissolving, always transforming, rapturous, but also ironic.

The little castle as a romantic place of longing and recollection with its intimate cabinets and rococo architecture is the ideal backdrop for this group exhibition.

An exhibition with works by: Stefan Bircheneder, Tjark Ihmels, Stefanie Kettel, Anna Lehmann-Brauns, Sebastian Meschenmoser, Merzmensch, Matthias Moravek, Marc Peschke, Jan Schmelcher, Tessa Wolkersdorfer, Marco Wagner, Stella Winter and Thomas Wrede.
