The first solo exhibition “Alice Neel: Un regard engagé” pays tribute to one of the most important American painters.
The retrospective covers the period of her first works at the end of the 1920s to her last paintings, which were created shortly before her death, a total of around 70 paintings and drawings as well as numerous documents.
The exceptional artist Alice Neel (1900-1984) painted people on the fringes of society. She showed their fears and the way they lived. The outcasts of society, the victims of social or gender oppression – Latin American and Puerto Rican immigrants, African-American writers, single mothers, and homosexual couples. Her pictures are considered important documents of their time.
The exhibition “Alice Neel: Un regard engagé” can be seen at the Centre Pompidou in Paris until 16 January 2023 .
