The Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz has erected semi-transparent mirror cubes above the four bridgeheads of the Salzburg State Bridge, in which neon lettering lights up, formulated in the artist’s handwriting: “Beyond Recall”, “Envision”, “Dedicated Secret” as well as a text that she borrowed from a memorial plaque on the bridge and which is dedicated to the prisoners of war and forced laborers who built the bridge between 1941 and 1945. This commemorative text is the basis of the concept of the work.
Infinite Memorial
The glass cubes reflect both the neon light inside and the incidence of light from outside, so that the lettering seems to continue indefinitely. The functional significance of the bridge overlaps with the historical one: the bridge is a traffic junction, a link between the old and new towns, and a symbol of historical inhumanity. “Beyond Recall” is a reminder against forgetting.
